Prerequisites: What You Need Before You Start

GrannySafe is a Chrome browser extension, which means the only requirement is that Google Chrome is installed on your parent's computer. Chrome runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, so it works on virtually any modern computer. If your parent currently uses a different browser — Microsoft Edge, Firefox, or Safari on Mac — you will need to either install Chrome first or use Chrome as a secondary browser dedicated to safer browsing.

To check if Chrome is already installed on Windows, press the Windows key, type "Chrome," and see if it appears. On a Mac, check the Applications folder or the Dock. If Chrome is not installed, visit google.com/chrome from any browser to download and install it for free.

Step 1: Open the Chrome Web Store

On your parent's computer, open Google Chrome. In the address bar at the top, type chrome.google.com/webstore and press Enter. This opens the official Chrome Web Store — the only safe place to install Chrome extensions. You can also navigate there by clicking the three-dot menu in the top right of Chrome, then selecting Extensions, then visiting the Chrome Web Store.

Important: never install browser extensions from any website other than the official Chrome Web Store. If you ever see a pop-up or website asking you to install an extension, it is almost certainly malicious.

Step 2: Search for GrannySafe

In the Chrome Web Store search bar, type "GrannySafe" and press Enter. The GrannySafe extension will appear in the results. Click on it to open the extension's detail page. Verify you have the right extension by checking that the publisher is listed as GrannySafe and the URL shows the official extension ID.

Step 3: Click "Add to Chrome"

On the extension detail page, click the blue "Add to Chrome" button in the top right. A dialog box will appear listing the permissions GrannySafe requires to function — these are standard permissions for security extensions that need to analyze page content. Click "Add extension" to confirm.

Chrome will download and install GrannySafe automatically. The process takes less than ten seconds on most connections. When it is complete, you will see a brief notification that GrannySafe has been added, and the GrannySafe icon will appear in the top-right area of the Chrome toolbar.

Step 4: Pin the Extension for Visibility

By default, newly installed extensions may be hidden in a collapsed extensions menu. To make GrannySafe always visible in the toolbar (which reassures your parent that it is active), click the puzzle piece icon in the top right of Chrome to open the extensions panel. Find GrannySafe and click the pin icon next to it. The GrannySafe shield icon will now appear permanently in the toolbar.

Step 5: Complete the Initial Setup

Click the GrannySafe icon in the toolbar to open the extension popup. You will be prompted to create an account or log in. Creating an account allows your parent's protection data to sync and allows you to check in remotely. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete setup — it takes about 60 seconds.

Once setup is complete, you will see a protection level selector. For most seniors, the "Maximum Protection" setting is recommended. This setting will flag potentially risky pages with a warning banner before your parent proceeds, giving them a chance to pause and reconsider.

Step 6: Test That It Is Working

GrannySafe's website includes a safe test page you can visit to confirm the extension is active and properly configured. Navigate to grannysafe.io/test to verify protection is working. You should see a notification from the extension confirming it is active on the page.

Step 7: How to Verify Protection Remotely

If you set up a GrannySafe account during installation, you can log into your account from your own device at grannysafe.io to see a summary of your parent's protection activity — how many scam pages were blocked, when the extension was last active, and whether any warnings were triggered. This gives you peace of mind without requiring you to be present at their computer.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

The extension is not showing up in the toolbar

Click the puzzle piece icon to check if GrannySafe is in the hidden extensions list. Click the pin icon to make it visible. If the extension does not appear in the list at all, try the installation steps again.

Chrome says the extension cannot be installed

This can happen if Chrome itself needs an update. Click the three-dot menu, then Help, then About Google Chrome. Chrome will check for and install any available updates automatically. After updating, try the installation again.

The extension shows as "inactive" or "disabled"

Navigate to chrome://extensions and find GrannySafe. Make sure the toggle switch on the right side is turned on (blue). If Chrome disabled it automatically, it may be due to a conflict with another extension — try disabling other security or ad-blocking extensions one at a time to identify any conflict.

Once GrannySafe is installed, consider pairing it with the broader browser safety configuration described in our complete safe browsing setup guide. And for a full review of all Chrome privacy settings worth adjusting, see our Chrome privacy settings guide for seniors.
